FURNITURE FUSION - COMBINING VINTAGE AND MODERN

Dear All

We often talk about food fusion, music fusion and fashion fusion as new lifestyles trends brought about by the increasing globalization and cultural flows through the media and travel. As we travel more, read more and surf the net more, we tend to be more open minded to the various influences, trends and lifestyles. We become more eclectic; creatively combining, blending, integrating, fusing the various influences and elements and creates something new, different and unique. Fusion in this sense is not a haphazard mix, an unthinking combination but a creative endeavour.

The same goes for furniture fusion, a tendency to creatively blend and integrate, mix and match the different forms, styles and textures, the different cultural heritage and legacies and the varying historical influences in furniture designs, furniture displays and furnishing. The end result of such creative endeavour is often a harmonious existence and integration, pleasing to the eyes and mind.

Some of my customers belong to those creative souls, who have successfully combined old and new, modern and vintage, colonial and ethnic, occidental and oriental, to create a unique and warmth ambience, worthy of a place called home. Below are some pictures of those creations and some vintage and modern furniture that have come into SECOND CHARM, the last one week, waiting for those creative souls to experiment the endless possibilities.

A lovely combination of old and new, vintage and modern, by Shah, an architect in Kuala Lumpur, who recently discovered us and has been asking me for several quotes on other vintage pieces that we have. The retro or midcentury modern armchair was from SECOND CHARM. The art deco 1950's glass display cabinet is his. We do get such art deco U-leg pieces from time to time

The retro 1960's teak armchair bought by Shah from SECOND CHARM. Shah left the back of the armchair bare to reveal the beautiful wood and design. The black pvc cushion seat is also from us.

Shah got the 4 white chairs from us. They are relatively modern. reproduction of American shaker type of furniture. Combining them with 2 vintage Malaccan/ kopitiam chairs is really
unique and interesting.

Zul's creation. A charming combination of European, modern and ethnic furniture and furnishing. The antique 1920's cupboard, often seen in Malay homes, was from SECOND CHARM. He painted it white to suit his black and white decor's theme. The modern dining chair is also from us.

Fiona Choy's charming combination of retro living room set, peranakan dining chairs and divider and european style console table. The 3-seater sofa and coffee table are from SECOND CHARM. The vintage blue fabric is also from us.

Johan's grand home who simply loves over the top furnishing. Entering his apartment, is like entering a 19th century european home, filled with Baroque furnitures, french armchairs, italian murals, oriental porcelains, chinosserie sideboards and screens, persian carpets and crystal chandeliers. He sourced them all over but comes to visit us almost every Friday after his prayer at a nearby mosque. The french armchairs were from SECOND CHARM. Several european furniture and furnishing and oriental cupboards in his home, have come from our shop.

Rare find of the week. A unique retro 1960's dresser in limewash Burmese teak. Exceptionally long for a retro dresser of the era. 6ft in length, it commands space and attention.

A pretty teak reproduction dresser. Sold to Hadassa who is opening her accessory boutique at Haji Lane, Singapore

An art deco 1950's solid teak dresser. Unrestored as yet.

Vintage luggages of the 70's and 80's. They are being rented out now to Lee Lee, for a theater production. Lovely colours.

Fiona, asked us to paint her vintage luggages in lovely fuschia pink, for window display at a boutique in Orchard, where she is working.

A cream handmade painted side table.

Mirror painted signages in wooden frames. Collectibles like these, add charm and character to our homes.

Chinese lacquer 4-panel foldable screen. Sold to Hadassa for her Haji Lane accessory boutique.

The other side of the screen

Vintage piano stool. The top part can be opened to a storage.

Mirror painted frame with Le Printemps word on it.

A fengshui mirror. Sold.

An handsome full length mirror with vintage stainless frame and stand. Reserved for Chris who bought a Kelvin Gormani sofa from us. I think they will look good together.

The KELVIN GORMANI LUXURY SOFA, bought by Chris Ong. Beautiful isnt it? Its slightly more than 7 ft. Chris got rid of his sofa and side table to make way for this piece. Totally worth it.

A modern fibre glass coffee table that will be perfect for the Gormani sofa above. But Chris has to get a rectangle table to suit his living room space.

He was eyeing this piece. Would have been a lovely combination of leather sofa and modern teak coffee table. The piece was however sold to Dr Liau.

A full length mirror in white wooden frame

A nice square Chinese style coffee table. Since it came on the day of our shipment, we sent it straight to Kuala Lumpur

A sturdy side teak coffee table. Also in KL

A rustic looking coffee table

An art deco 1950's teak bedside or phone table. Helping a friend to sell it since she decided to go all retro. Reserving it for Mohd who bought several art deco pieces from us recently.

A cute chinese pine low square table.

A vintage 1970's foldable table. The wonderful thing about this piece, is that the table top is solid teak. Sold to Mohd who simply loves the vintage green formica.

A wing chair with teak legs. Need reupholstery. Wing chair is expensive to reupholster. But worth it if you have a particular fabric to suit your interior decor in mind. Or if you are thinking of a private chair to sink into after a hard day's work or to enjoy a good book.

A planter's chair that needs recaning. Recaning for such a big piece like this is expensive. But if you must have a planter's chair for that colonial mood, it is worth the recaning. Still cheaper than if you were to get it new. We recane in Malacca.

An Indonesian teak armchair.

A mahogany European style chair. Sold to Azizah

A pair of fine teak dining chairs. Well made and well carved

A pair of Victorian design armchairs in mahogany wood. Need reupholstery

A pair of french armchairs in teak wood and tapestry fabric

An elegant french armchair in ashwood. Sold to Azizah

An interesting chair with curved bended wooden back. One of those scandinavian design piece.

A modern swivel chair . Be nice if on wooden or stainless steel legs.

A modern design office swivel chair.

So much for today. Till my next posting,

Warmest regards

Sharifah
