MIDCENTURY MODERN FURNISHING - AS A TRENDY LIFESTYLE OF THE BOBOS IN PARADISE

The mid century modern furniture and furnishings is a rage among the so called bobos in paradise, if I may use David  Brooks' term to compliment  a new upper class that adventurously  "wed the bourgeois world of capitalist enterprise to the hippie values of the bohemian counterculture". (bobos is an amalgam of bourgeois and bohemian). A cultural consequence of the information age, this new generation is having fun in creating a hybrid , ecclectic lifestyle: bourgeois-bohemian, occidental-oriental, status quo-leftism, consumption-conservation.  In spite of the fact, that they are comfortable with the blending of the best of both worlds, the aesthetic orientation of this design conscious group seems to focus on mid century modern furniture and furnishings. They simply love the clear lines, functionalism and simplified forms of midcentury modern  furniture. Mid century furnishings seem to eliminate clutter, create more living space and suitable for modern living

Though the appeal of the midcentury resurfaced during the 1990's, the momentum does not seem to slacken, judging by the ever strong passion to own original  pieces from the 50's and 60's.  As one writer puts it, "the timeless appeal of the era shows that midcentury design was not just a fleeting historical phenomenon, but an aesthetic that will have allure well into the future".

Below is a classic mid century modern furnishing by a young talented  photographer, Naz, for his home, right in the heartland of Singapore.  And we are proud that almost all the  pieces came from Second Charm, from the three-seater black and white sofa, armchairs and  sideboard.  The retro coffee table was Naz's but we helped him restore and replaced the top formica with a vintage recycled one, keeping it as original as possible.

Naz, proudly calls himself the mid century modernist. This photograph which captures the essence of mid century furnishing so beautifully, will also be 

a classic as the furnishing.

A combination of both retro and  art deco. Taken up by Saifudin who could

 see the beauty of both period styles.

Midcentury dining tables made of solid wood are  difficult to come by nowadays. 

 But we managed to secure a few fine pieces.

 Vee restored. The inside was painted turqoise blue as requested.

Another piece of Vee that we helped her restore. Inherited from the former owner of the house she bought, it now returns to the same home with a new lease of life.

An art deco 1950's cupboard that we helped Jonald restore.  When we first got it, 

all glasses and  shelves were missing.

We took up the challenge of restoring this vintage tv cabinet of Jonald's.  It was really in  bad condition when we first collected it. We took out the tv and  replaced it with shelves  as requested.  We kept the rest as original as possible.  We restored the laminated box  and wooden stand, polished all the metal knobs, inserted the

 speaker panels back to  its original position.

Part of the laminate at the doors were missing. We managed to replac it as close to the  original as possible. Jonald was happy with the outcome and we are happy too, to be of service in preserving such an icon of the 70's.

A lovely catalog cabinet that we restored for Calvin.

The catalog cabinet above comes with a pull down shutter. The shutter was spoilt.

It was tough repairing it but we did it. It would be a pity to leave it unrepaired  

as it is an interesting part of the catalog cabinet.
