Dear All
Last weekend was a busy one for us at SECOND CHARM, Kuala Lumpur, because we have to ship some pieces of furniture to Singapore on 28 July. Lots of shifting furniture, rearranging, touched up, oiling, packing and finally putting them up the lorry to the maximum. My restorer, Haji Yusuf, who is a genius at restoration, is also a master in carefully arranging the restored pieces up his lorry, so as not to damage the beautifully restored pieces.
The furniture will transit in Malacca for a few days, where quite a few pieces, for my Singapore customers, are waiting to be shipped together. I already made arrangement for immediate deliveries on the same day for most of them, because of the space constraints and also because some of you have been waiting for some time. A few others are waiting to view some of the pieces. To Ting Hway, Dan, Daryl, Fiona, Mohd, Cindy, Kym, Ali Milmohd, Terence, Kenneth and Millie, God willing the pieces will arrive on Thursday, 29 July.
Last weekend, also saw a few of my regulars introducing their friends to us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Khalil, a designer with Malaysian Airlines for bringing over his friends: Majdi, Nellie and her boyfriend. I like Majdi for his genuine and sincere love for things vintage. Though we just met for the first time, he kindly shared with me pictures from his handphone, of some of the beautiful vintage furniture he acquired. He bought an antique Singer table top sewing machine from us. I'm happy because I know it has found a new appreciative owner. Nellie, bought 6 teak foldable outdoor chairs, sitting pretty while her boyfriend did all the hard work of packing them onto the boot of the car. Ah! how I miss those courtship days, when I get to do such things.
Ms Lum, one of my long time customers, also brought her sister-in-law, Mrs Tsen and a friend. Mrs Tsen bought a restored vintage shoe rack. Ms Lum reserved an old 1940's chingay cabinet and a brass-wooden coat hanger. She came back about two hours later, together with a young couple, saying she just wanted to introduce them to the shop. It was really kind and generous of her. She picked up the reserved items on Sunday. The best part is that, she literally pushed her cheque book to me and asked me to fill whatever amount I'm asking her!
Calvin, a young designer, who is opening his fashion shop soon, bought a retro 1960's teak coffee table, a carved 3-seater tufted back maroon velvety sofa, a french armchair and a pair of vintage Yamaha speakers. I'm hoping he will also take the vintage 1940's sloping glass showcase from us to complement the one he already has so that he can perfect the L-shaped formation as advised by his feng shui consultant.
A carved wooden frame sofa with tufted back, bought by Calvin. I'm helping Calvin to look for a vintage chesterfield sofa, with that similar tufted back.
We had a new customer too last weekend. An attractive young lady , who discovered us after reading an article about us in Glam Dekor magazine. She is looking for a vintage porcelain kopitiam rectangle sink, old doors and windows. I may just have that sink. She bought a vintage, colonial travelling chest from us and we had to find space for it in her 2-seater white Mercedes sports car.
Very rarely, we get good vintage furniture in Kuala Lumpur. But on Saturday, someone brought in a lovely 1950's art deco burmese teak coffee table in limewash finish. We sold it the next day to Fern, who simply felt in love with it. She has always loved vintage furniture in its original condition, refusing to restore, repairing only when needed. So she was happy to get it as it is. She has come initially to look for a small dining table. I showed her a vintage drop leaf teak table. She liked the practicality of the table, extendable on one hand and collapsible when you want to save space. She did not hesitate in buying it.
Just before I rushed out to the waiting cab to go back to Singapore, Prof Habshah and Norshah dropped by. I had to leave them in the good hands of my staff. I hope Norshah will take the 6 white cottage dining chairs and the white cane dresser set that comes with mirror, stool and bedside cabinet. Prof Habshah, who introduced Norshah to us a few months ago, was trying to convince her, how those furniture would be perfect for her country home in Kuang.
6 white dining chairs for Norshanh country home. She already has a big drop leaf pine dining table from us.
White cane stool for the dresser.
Since this post, the furniture collected last week in Kuala Lumpur and Malacca had arrived punctually in Singapore on Thursday 29 July. Will share some of the beautifully restored pieces in that shipment with you soon.
Till then, warmest regards
